New Delhi: Out of a total of 54 state road transport corporations in the country in the 2017-18 financial year, only six state road transport corporations have benefited. Odisha is one of the four state road transport corporations that have benefited. In 2016-17, the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation has earned a total of Rs 1.7 crore. Odisha ranks seventh in the list of state road transport corporations that have made a profit. The Odisha State Road Transport Corporation has made a profit of Rs 1.7 crore after paying Rs 5.91 crore in taxes in 2017-18. The data is cited in a recent report by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, “Review of the Performance of Test Road Transport and Taking.” According to the report, the state road transport corporation earned Rs 5 crore in 2015-16. In 2017-18, six other states benefited from road transport corporations, including Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Kanpur City and Sikkim. On the other hand, four states lost Rs 13,956 crore in road transport in 2017-18. Compared to 2015-16, the loss rate increased by 24 percent, according to the report. This is clearly stated in the report of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The state road transport corporation is heavily dependent on state funding. The state government has provided Rs 14.51 crore for the state road transport corporation, while the central government has provided Rs 15.62 crore. According to the report, the state road transport has not taken any loans from any banks or financial institutions. In 2016-17, Rs 7.25 lakh was collected from passengers by the State Transport Corporation. This is a slight increase from 2015-16. In 2015-16, Rs 427.32 lakh was collected from passengers. Traffic revenue was collected at Rs 73.5 lakh in 2016-17, while in 2015-16 it was Rs 34.8 lakh. The state transport corporation received Rs 21.8 lakh for advertising in 2017-18. On the other hand, in the 2015-16 advertisement, the state road transport corporation received Rs 14.1 lakh, the report said. Not only that, the state road transport corporation received Rs 2.5 lakh in 2016-17 from the fines, according to the report. In 2017-18, the State Transport Corporation had 28 accidents. According to the report, the total number of employees in the State Road Transport Corporation in 2016-17 was 1,451.
