Techie Says ‘Relatively Young’ Remark Came Before Layoff
A Microsoft software engineer in Hyderabad has claimed that he was laid off during the company’s recent workforce reduction after his manager described him as “relatively young” and suggested that he had fewer personal responsibilities. The employee, who has around three years of professional experience, shared his account online while seeking new employment opportunities.
‘My Family Depends on My Income’
The engineer said the remarks were particularly difficult because he is the sole earning member of his family. He reportedly supports his parents, contributes towards his sister’s education and is also helping with repayment of a family loan. His account has drawn attention to how assumptions about an employee’s personal circumstances can differ from their actual responsibilities.
Several Team Members Reportedly Affected
According to the employee, a significant portion of his team was also affected by the latest round of job cuts. While his manager reportedly referred to his age and perceived lack of major responsibilities, the engineer later acknowledged that this may not have been the actual reason for his selection and that the comment could have been intended to offer reassurance during a difficult conversation.
Engineer Brings Backend and AI Experience
The tech professional said he has experience in backend and full-stack software development and has recently worked on Agentic AI projects. He also highlighted his participation in hackathons and said he is currently exploring opportunities for Software Engineer and Software Engineer II positions.
Actively Searching for a New Role
Following the job loss, the engineer said he is open to opportunities with technology companies, startups and businesses in other sectors. He has also indicated an interest in freelance and contract assignments as he works to secure another source of income.
Layoff Account Triggers Online Conversation
The employee’s post has sparked discussion about layoffs, workplace decision-making and the assumptions employers may make about employees’ financial responsibilities. His experience also reflects the uncertainty faced by technology workers as companies continue to restructure their teams. However, the claim that his age was the reason for his layoff remains his personal account and has not been independently established as the company’s official reason for the job cut.
