Rajesh Patil has joined as the new commissioner of Bhubaneswar Metropolitan Corporation (BMC). Before joining as BMC Commissioner, he has worked as District Magistrate of many districts. IAS Patil has struggled since childhood to study. Like others, he never dropped out of school due to lack of money. From a very young age, he used to go from house to house selling bread and vegetables to raise his education expenses. Rajesh Patil was born into a poor family in Jalgaon, a small village in the Khandesh district of Maharashtra. His father had very little land which was not enough to feed the family. Rajesh’s parents worked as laborers to support the family. Seeing such a struggle between his parents, Rajesh used to help them with their studies since childhood.
Rajesh was not a good student at school. But the lack of money could not stop the desire to do something. He also put up good numbers in +2 like 10th. But due to lack of money, he did not get a seat in the medical and engineering colleges. Later, he did not have any money to pay the fees when he got admission in the college for his third year. For this, he cultivated the fields to raise the expenses. After toiling in the field all day, he came in the evening to study. His hard work paid off when he got a job with the Indian Statistical Services. He was obsessed with being an IAS since childhood. He also prepared for the IAS by working in the Indian Statistical Services. Later he also became IAS.
As a child, Rajesh used to address his mother as ‘collector’s mother’. Since childhood, he had faith that one day or the other he would achieve his dream. And on the day he became a collector, he came home and screamed that he had become a collector.
After completion of IAS training, in 2006 he was appointed as Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Athagarh, Koraput as Odisha cadre. In 2008 there was a big flood in Mahanadi. In which he played an important role by rescuing the flood victims. In 2009, he took charge as the District Magistrate of Koraput, Kandhamal and Mayurbhanj. He was in the post of District Collector for 8 years. He declared the district as the first child labor free district when he was the District Collector in Mayurbhanj. He started Manarega, a solar-powered beverage service, and was honored with the Excellence Award three times. His book “Maa Mu Collector Heli” ‘ is still one of the people’s favorite books.
