The Supreme Court has stayed the Madras High Court judgment that had cancelled the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to provide compassionate appointments to eligible family members of Karur tragedy victims.
The Supreme Court’s interim order allows the matter to remain open while it examines the State government’s challenge to the High Court ruling.
Justice Pardiwala Questions Challenge to Jobs for Karur Stampede Victims’ Families
Justice J.B. Pardiwala questioned why the Tamil Nadu government should be prevented from providing employment to families who lost their earning members in the Karur stampede.
The Supreme Court observed that if a sole earning member of a family dies in such a tragic incident, the government could consider providing employment to the deceased person’s son, daughter or wife, subject to their educational qualifications.
Justice Pardiwala also questioned the objection to the government’s policy, noting that the State could choose to provide financial compensation or other assistance to affected families.
The remarks came as the Supreme Court stayed the Madras High Court’s judgment that had quashed the Tamil Nadu government’s policy of providing compassionate appointments to eligible family members of Karur stampede victims.
