Vijay’s Big Welfare Push: 3 Free LPG Cylinders, Wider Free Bus Travel for Women
Chennai: In a major women-focused welfare announcement, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has unveiled a package of measures aimed at easing the financial burden on households and improving women’s mobility. The headline initiatives include three free LPG cylinders every year for eligible families and an expanded free bus travel facility for women and transgender persons.
Three Free LPG Cylinders a Year
Under the new LPG assistance scheme, eligible families will receive financial support equivalent to the cost of three LPG cylinders every year. The assistance is expected to be transferred directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism. The move is aimed at providing relief to families facing rising household expenses and cooking-fuel costs.
Scheme Set to Begin From Pongal
The LPG benefit is expected to take effect from Pongal in January 2027, adding a significant welfare component to the festival period. Beneficiaries are expected to receive the financial assistance after booking and receiving an eligible LPG cylinder, subject to the government’s prescribed conditions.
Free Bus Travel Gets a Wider Reach
In another major announcement, the government has decided to expand the existing free bus travel scheme for women. The extended facility is expected to cover additional government-operated services, including certain inter-district buses. The move is designed to make daily travel more affordable for women travelling for work, education, healthcare and other essential activities.
Transgender Persons Also Included
The expanded transport benefit will also cover transgender persons, according to the announcement. The government has indicated that the facility will not be restricted by an income ceiling or a fixed number of trips, potentially allowing beneficiaries greater freedom to use public transport.
Focus on Women’s Financial Security
The latest measures form part of a broader women-centric welfare agenda associated with Vijay’s earlier election promises. These included ₹2,500 monthly financial assistance for eligible women heads of households, along with proposals aimed at supporting women entrepreneurs and strengthening economic independence.
Aimed at Cutting Everyday Expenses
Together, the LPG and transport measures are intended to provide relief from two recurring household costs—cooking fuel and commuting. For eligible families, the combination could translate into meaningful savings over the course of a year, while expanded free bus travel could improve women’s access to employment, education and essential services.
