New Delhi: As many as 10 trade unions have called for a nationwide strike on Thursday, November 26. The shutdown will be observed in protest of central government policies such as privatization of the public sector and new farming laws. The trade unions calling for the closure are the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), the All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICSTU), the Center of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the All India United Trade Union (AITUC). Employees’ unions in insurance, banking, railways and state and central government agencies will also take part in the nationwide shutdown. The 24-hour strike, which starts at midnight on November 25, will be attended by about 1.4 crore workers. Trade union leaders have announced that workers from all walks of life, except for essential services, will take part in nationwide protests. Trade unions are demanding the repeal of anti-labor and anti-farmer bills. And the government should stop privatizing in public areas like railways. However, the BJP-led Bharat Workers’ Party (BJP) has made it clear that it will not take part in the strike.
