The United States has issued an advisory for its citizens amid escalating violent protests in Iran. The US virtual embassy has advised them to leave Iran immediately.
The advisory mentions arrests, injuries, security measures and internet shutdowns. The Iranian government has blocked access to mobile phones, landlines and the national internet network, it said. Citizens are being asked to leave the country through Armenia or Turkey and use alternative means of communication. The protests have so far killed more than 6,600 people and arrested 10,681.
Airlines are limiting or canceling flights to and from Iran, the advisory said. Many airlines have suspended service until Friday, January 16. US citizens should be aware that internet disruptions will continue.
